Ginuwine, Band of Horses and Chrisette Michele are your top concert choices this week
Ginuwine
Saddle up for a wild night with one of the most revered R&B artists of the 1990s: That’s right, Ginuwine is back. But this American hero (real name Elgin Lumpkin, no joke), best known for his 1996 hit, “Pony,” never really went away. If you want to brush up on some of his best work before Friday night’s show at the Voodoo Lounge, go back to the rest of that seminal first album, Ginuwine…the Bachelor, or his 1999 follow-up, 100% Ginuwine. Hell, pick up 2013’s A Ginuwine Christmas, on which his reimagined version of “12 Days of Christmas” will put you in the mood for the holidays — and maybe something else, too.
8 p.m. Friday, December 16, at Voodoo Lounge, Harrah’s North Kansas City, 1 Riverboat Dr
Band of Horses
with Local Natives, Warpaint, Jaenki
For the final night of radio station 96.5 KRBZ’s annual Christmas takeover of the Midland, a host of admirable electro-pop bands has been assembled. First up: Band of Horses, the 10-year-old band that — despite lead singer Ben Bridwell’s rather whiny lilt — gets by on a propensity for meaty guitar jams and beautiful, elegiac harmonies. What Los Angeles’ Local Natives lacks in sunshine on its latest album, Sunlit Youth, it makes up for in pervasive, moody, very hook-heavy ennui. Warpaint, also from L.A., is moody in a different, sexier way, embedding a few waves of mysticism and goth-rock into guitar-shredding gloom. Kansas City’s own Jaenki rounds out the night.
6:30 p.m. Saturday, December 17, at Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland, 1228 Main
Chrisette Michele
Chrisette Michele is in love, and she wants the whole world to know it. On her latest album, Milestone, the R&B singer highlights what sounds like the real thing with tracks such as “Unbreakable,” “Soulmate” and “Equal,” and damned if any single girl listening won’t get a little relationship envy. (Michele’s fiancé and former Motown Records manager, Doug “Biggs” Ellison, is also credited as executive producer on Milestone.) That’s not to say the record is all heart-shaped emojis; especially enjoyable is the moment she takes to throw shade to the haters on “These Stones.” For the most part, though, Michele seems to revel in the joy she has found. Wednesday night at the Midland, join the love fest.
