Get Brit

It’s fair to say that the Lenexa Community Center (13420 Oak) doesn’t evoke the stately traditions of Great Britain the way Buckingham Palace does. But for the Daughters of the British Empire in Kansas, the location is fit for a queen — or several, depending on who shows up for afternoon tea at the local DBE chapter’s annual British Faire from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today. It’s afternoon tea, mind you, which is lighter than high tea; the DBE women will serve little sandwiches, scones, shortbreads, jam tarts and as much tea as you can drink (from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.). Vendors will offer all kinds of British products, including jewelry and tinned puddings. The Welsh and Scottish dancers return to whirl about, and, for the first time, children’s activities are featured, permitting harried mothers a moment to sip tea in peace. For more information on admission costs and costs for the tea, contact Lynda Krupp at 913-962-4031. No peerage titles are necessary, but good manners are a must.
