What I do (in 140 characters): I create jewelry, music and art. I’m an entrepreneur. I’m a rebel at heart, seeking new adventures every day that inspire my work.
What’s your drink? Wine
Where’s dinner? I just tried the new restaurant Novel, and I’m hooked. I also love the Rieger, Westside Local and the Farmhouse.
What’s on your KC postcard? A picture of Stella. She’s our mascot for the Gypsy Market Royale, which I helped start and I co-run with Jessica Rogers. She literally has been on a postcard, which was our very first flier.
Finish this sentence: “Kansas City got it right when … “ It built the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
“Kansas City needs … ” Better public transportation.
“In five years, I’ll be … ” Designing jewelry, playing music and traveling the world.
“I always laugh at … ” Accidental puns, usually that come out of my own mouth.
“I’ve been known to binge-watch … “ The Indiana Jones trilogy. Aaahhhhh … Harrison Ford in his prime. Can we clone one for me?
“I can’t stop listening to … “ The Pixies. Permanently, my all-time favorite band since I was 12.
“I just read … “ Many Minds, Many Masters, by Brian Weiss. This book was recommended to me by a very dear friend, and it has changed my outlook on the way I see everything in life. I’m a happier person because I read this book.
“People might be surprised to know that … “ I played golf on a scholarship when I attended Rockhurst University and that I have a degree in both Spanish and international business. Most surprisingly, I have never taken a jewelry class. I am self-taught.
The best advice I ever got: Listen to the universe. Trust your intuition. Set your ego aside.
Worst advice? To stop following my dreams.
My sidekick? Allan Gato, my cat. I’ve had him for more than 12 years, almost the entire time I’ve lived in Kansas City. Also, my iPhone. I could not run my business without it.
I spend my paycheck at: Gem and mineral shows
My brush with fame: I was recently filmed by Google to be in an upcoming online video where they are highlighting 12 companies within 12 countries to show how the Internet has changed international commerce online. We sell in boutiques in Japan and Canada and many other countries, thanks to Etsy. We shall see where the video and Google will take us. Hoping for more than 15 minutes of fame.
Brush with the law: I was chased by the cops a few times in my teens for sneaking out and meeting friends and hanging out. They never caught me.
Favorite charity: My mother died of a heart attack, and it has become my life mission to educate women about the effects and symptoms of heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women, more than all cancers combined. I donate to St. Luke’s Hospital’s Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center every time my company sells our Anatomical Heart Necklace. I also donate to KC’s chapter of the American Heart Association when we sell the Heart Nouveau Necklace.
My recent triumph: My painting “Anatomical Heart” was purchased and hung in the entrance of the Muriel I. Kauffman Women’s Heart Center with a plaque stating, “In memory of Nancy Lee Griebel,” in honor of my mother.
Gypsy Market Royale is 12 – 5 p.m. Saturday, August 3, at 1505 Genessee.
