Further Review
“This is the way we are going to do business: We’ve decided if it’s in a public forum, if it’s newsworthy, we’re going to play it [on the air], and we’re going to let you folks see what goes on around professional sports. I don’t see any reason why we in the media should sweep stories under the carpet and protect the image of these people. That’s ridiculous to me.”
— Kevin Kietzman, in 1998, explaining his radio station’s coverage of the Chiefs, KTCE 1510
“We want to break stories. The TV guys are not going to air that [Andre Rison] story. When have you watched Channel 4, Channel 5, Channel 9 or Channel 41 and seen a negative story about the Chiefs? Or even a controversial story?”
— Chad Boeger, 1510 program manager in 1998
GH: From their earliest days together, Kietzman and Boeger have prided themselves on building a radio station that will not buckle to the strong-arm tactics of the Chiefs.
“Sounds good to me.”
— Tim Grunhard, regarding Jason Whitlock’s heading to rival radio station KMBZ 980
GH: Many believe if Whitlock bolts to 980, Grunhard and Bill Maas will replace him on WHB 810’s early-morning drive-time slot. Asked whether he was interested in getting up for the 6 a.m. show, Grunhard replied, “Money talks.”
“I was upset last year after everybody got so excited about [Kansas’] making the Sweet 16. I don’t want to be a fan or a former player of a team that gets excited about making the Sweet 16. I want to make the Final Four.”
— Greg Gurley, former Kansas Jayhawk, 810
“Yes I did get a haircut. I’m trying for a little more clean-cut appearance this year. I don’t know if I can commit to 32 years [like Norm Stewart], but how about 22?”
— Quin Snyder, Missouri basketball coach, 810
“If you look at the last five MVPs on this [Chiefs] team, they were drafted or brought here by someone else. We’ve got to draft MVPs and develop people into MVPs.”
— Dick Vermeil, 980
GH: This is one of the most refreshing statements I’ve ever heard from the Chiefs. Admitting that you have a problem is half the battle.
