Further Review

“Take it from me. The good old days, they weren’t always so good. You want to know about baseball’s Golden Age? Well, let me tell you this: You’re living in it right now. Yeah. Today.”
Buck O’Neil, New Jersey Star-Ledger

GH: Isn’t it sad that the Golden Age of baseball is now, when the Royals are suffering through their worst decade in the team’s history?

“I’m not a racism expert. I don’t know what racism is. I discriminate against a lot of people as far as interviews on this program go. I discriminate against children because they don’t make good radio. I don’t think I hate children because I don’t have them on this show. I’ve had a lot of things on the show get me down over the years. This is not going to be one of them. This doesn’t bother me. Hey, if that’s the worst thing I say on the radio, I’ve done pretty well. I really don’t regret a thing.”
Kevin Kietzman, responding to criticism of his policy not to interview Tony Peña because of Peña’s accent, WHB 810

GH: If you were wondering whether Kietzman has apologized for his ignorant stance on Peña, he hasn’t. Because he is one of 810’s owners, it appears the only reprimand he’ll receive will be from the public.

“I heard [Keenan] McCardell say that he is looking for a team that can really be a contender. I would have a hard time believing that about the Chiefs right now.”
Bill Maas, 810

“The Chiefs will never get under 50,000 [fans] a game, no matter if they lose every game.”
Tim Grunhard, 810

GH: Many people thought similarly about Royals crowds back in the late ’80s. Taking a fanbase for granted is one of the quickest ways to lose it.

“If you’re just going to look at that one statistic, you can pick one number and make it say anything you want.”
Soren Petro, arguing with a caller that trading for Carlos Hernandez was a good deal, KMBZ 980

“Soren Petro, the most listened-to sports-talk-show host in Kansas City.”

GH: Interesting what you can do with stats when you focus on one number, isn’t it?
