“Does John McEnroe know that when you use steroids, you still have to work out?”
— Tim Grunhard, after Tatum O’Neal accused her scrawny ex-husband McEnroe of using steroids during his tennis career, WHB 810
“Should McEnroe tell 20/20 that [he and O’Neal] used to have anal sex? Do you think the public would look at her differently? Do you know how many ex-wives are going to come out of the closet on 20/20 to tell stuff about their ex-husbands?”
— Bill Maas, 810
“The 29-year-old [Greg] Ostertag, who will receive more than $16 million the next two years as his multiyear contract with the [Utah] Jazz runs its course, averaged just 3.3 points and 4.2 boards in 14.9 minutes per game last season.”
— Gary Bedore, Lawrence Journal-World
“I’ll come in next season with a completely new attitude and try to really help the team more than I have the last couple years.”
— Ostertag, Lawrence Journal-World
GH: What kind of attitude did Ostertag show up with last season when he was grossly overpaid for his meager contributions? When it comes to overpaying athletes, the NBA is in a league of its own.
“Nick Collison can shoot his (bleep) off. He can shoot the ball well for a big guy. He’s going to be tough to guard in the [NBA], just like Drew [Gooden] will be this year. When Nick comes out, he will be a great player. Drew can handle the ball. He can post up and shoot threes. He’ll probably face up bigger guys on the perimeter. Wayne [Simien] is big and strong. Kirk Hinrich is one of the fastest players I’ve seen with the ball, as well as Aaron [Miles]. And that little guy Jeff [Hawkins] can run, too. KU’s guys are the most athletic guys I’ve seen in a while. They are a lot more athletic than the [NBA] guys I play with, and we’ve got an athletic team. We had a running team.”
— Greg Ostertag, after scrimmaging with KU players in Lawrence last month, Lawrence Journal-World
GH: Ostertag didn’t score in the scrimmage, but he did show up in a brand new Humvee. A group of former KU players that included Danny Manning, Billy Thomas, Nick Bradford, Lester Earl, Jeff Boschee and Steve Woodberry lost 73-80 to the current Jayhawks.
