Further Review
“Fortunately for the shirtless pair, the first Kansas City player to reach them was Neifi Perez, who doesn’t hit much.”
— King Kaufman, on the men who attacked Royals’ first-base coach Tom Gamboa’s at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Salon.com
“If you don’t want pressure, go to Kansas or go to Indiana. Go somewhere where you’re going to play and go through the motions. At the end of the day, you should jump up and down that people care this much. I’m inundated with people who say, ‘Oh, my gosh! What’s going on?’ I say to myself, ‘The minute that leaves, that’s when the real trouble happens.'”
— Trev Alberts, ESPN college football analyst, on Nebraska’s players’ feeling pressure to win, Omaha World Herald
GH: KU Coach Mark Mangino won’t appreciate Alberts’ comment, but there is little doubt that the pressure to win football games at Kansas is not as great as at the other Big 12 North schools. If it were, the alums would not have allowed Athletic Director Al Bohl to hire Mangino.
“All I know is that not one of our kids was recruited by a Big 12 school. This [trip to Lawrence] is only our second plane trip since I’ve been here. We should not beat Kansas. You want to compare budgets? You want to compare facilities? You want to compare recruits?”
— Urban Meyer, head coach of Bowling Green, prior to its 39-16 win over KU, which followed its 51-28 kicking of Mizzou the week before, WHB 810
GH: There are probably at least a few people in Columbia and Lawrence wondering why Meyer isn’t coaching for them instead of beating them.
“One thing you’ve got to understand is that the Chiefs pass defense is 31st out of 32 teams. These guys are garbage. Not only garbage, they’re hot garbage. I mean that’s a stench with hot garbage that is unbelievable.”
— Deion Sanders, NFL analyst, prior to the Chiefs 41-38 loss to New England, CBS
“Oh yeah, it makes me mad when people get on [Trent Green]. I don’t think fans really understand what quarterbacks go through. You gotta cut him some slack. This guy is a great quarterback capable of taking us where we need to go.”
— Tony Gonzalez, KCTV Channel 5
GH: Green is “going through” millions of Lamar Hunt’s dollars while we wait for Dick Vermeil to admit his mistake and bench Green.
