Full Feature, Ghosty, Be/Non, Truth Cell and Jumbo’s Killcrane
Teetotalers beware: It’s time to get Loaded in Lawrence once again. The fourth disc in the ongoing series that documents the region’s musical talent will be unveiled at a release party starring five of the disc’s eighteen bands: Full Feature (pictured), Be/Non, Ghosty, Truth Cell and Jumbo’s Killcrane. It’s a well-rounded lineup. Ghosty’s “Henry Green” is one of Loaded’s standout tracks, Truth Cell is far more convincing than the bulk of its Cookie-Monster-throated peers, and Jumbo’s Killcrane continues to be one of the area’s most underrated talents. For listeners, Loaded provides a fairly accurate snapshot of Lawrence’s diverse, cliquish scene. Keeping with local tradition, hip-hop gets the shaft, but rock and metal are well represented. Filthy Jim and the Esoteric turn in powerhouse performances, and KC motorpsycho outfit the Last of the V8s ramrods through its autobiographical “Drunk Again.” Sadly, some of Lawrence’s best — and best known — acts are nowhere to be found. Live cuts from Kill Creek, the Get Up Kids, the Anniversary and the Appleseed Cast would’ve made for one tasty disc, but their absences make room for a handful of relative newcomers. Underscoring the area’s ever-shifting landscape, two bands (Proudentall and Ruskabank) have already split since the disc was recorded last April, and Roots Crew frontman Brent Berry vanished into thin air several weeks ago. But any disc that juxtaposes Theta with DJ Not a DJ is worth celebrating, and more than a few Loaded revelers should be on hand at Friday night’s kickoff bash.
