Friday Freebies

And once again, we bring you Friday Freebies, wherein we present things to do this weekend that won’t cost you any more than the gas it takes to get to ’em.
This weekend, places all over country will be hosting events in celebration of Monday’s Martin Luther King Day. Kansas City and Lawrence are no different, and there is a plethora of things in which one can participate. Lawrence’s events have their own website, which lists things like Sunday’s Gospel Musical at the Free Methodist Church, 3001 Lawrence Avenue, at 6:30 p.m. Hit up the website for a complete schedule of events.
In addition to the various MLK events, you can catch a music and poetry performance at the Writers Place tonight at 7:30 p.m. Kevin Rabas, co-director of the creative writing program at Emporia State University and co-editor of Flint Hills Review will be appearing with singer-songwriter Lisa Moritz.
There are two art openings this weekend. The first runs from 6-10:00 p.m tonight, at the Urban Culture Project Space. Entitled “Cumulus,” there will be a live performance piece and a video performance piece, as well as more at the Paragraph Gallery next door. The second exhibition is Sunday from 2-4:00 p.m., at Epsten Gallery at Village Shalom. Larry Thomas‘s exhibition, “Ploys & Decoys” is a solo exhibition of new large-scale mixed media paintings and portfolio prints.
The Pitch’s Chris Packham wrote up both events, and you can find more on Larry Thomas here and the Urban Culture Project here.
