Free Chow

The Confucius Institute of the University of Kansas and the KC Chinese American Association screens Stephen Chow’s CJ7 at 10 a.m. at the Glenwood Arts (9575 Metcalf, Overland Park, 913-642-4404) as part of their 2011 Kansas City Chinese Film Festival. Director Chow is best known to U.S. audiences for 2004’s Kung Fu Hustle, but this 2008 family movie is miles away from Hustle’s Looney Toons take on martial arts. The plot: A poor laborer gives his son a toy, which turns out to be an alien. Precocious young ones who like to read subtitles may like this next-to-last offering of the festival, which ends its weekly showings next Saturday morning with In Love We Trust. Admission is free, but a $2 donation will be accepted. A discussion led by Megan Greene, KU associate professor of Chinese history, follows the movie.
