Freak Love

Christmas on Mars, Flaming Lips singer Wayne Coyne’s directorial debut, remains unavailable for public screening. But that film’s cinematographer, Bradley Beesley, realized that the band’s own story was just as interesting as Coyne’s perennially unfinished sci-fi saga. In 2005’s Fearless Freaks, Beesley unveils Coyne’s humble home base: A $20,000 house in Oklahoma City, with Christmas on Mars props dotting the yard like surreal sculptures. Coyne, who has lived within Oklahoma’s boundaries for all of his 45 years, makes an inspiring role model for local musicians who plan to succeed without leaving the Midwest. Fearless Freaks also contains costume-intensive concert footage and a dramatic subplot in which Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd overcomes his heroin addiction (after a harrowing shoot-up scene). The Record Bar (1020 Westport Road, 816-753-5207) screens Fearless Freaks at 7 tonight, the weekly time slot for free B-movies and rock documentaries.
