Four Inane Questions with artist Katherine Bernhardt and fashion designer Jeremy Scott
Talk about a one-two punch. Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College is unleashing a new exhibition this week that unites contemporary artist Katherine Bernhardt’s paintings and fashion designer Jeremy Scott’s iconic looks.
Both artists hail from Missouri and are known for creative themes that showcase their combined love of pop culture and irreverent humor. Think kitsch meets high art. Or is it high art meets kitsch?
Either way, their new show A Match Made in Heaven will feature 34 paintings by Bernhardt and over 100 looks by Scott. It’s set to open this Friday and will run through early August. Patrons will immediately spy how the duo have taken ubiquitous consumer products and rebranded them into art and fashion.
We caught up with the two popular artists ahead of their show’s debut to inundate them with our insipid questions.
The Pitch: If you were a Pantone color, what Pantone color would you be?
Jeremy Scott: I would be 219 C—It’s Barbie’s signature pink. I think it brings joy just like she does!
If you could have any animal, real or imaginary, as a pet, what would it be?
Katherine Bernhardt: Afghan Hound and have really good hair!
Scott: A Capuchin monkey!
If you could add one perk to your job, what would that be?
Bernhardt: Private jet that didn’t pollute.
Scott: I didn’t have to work on a deadline—time could be elastic!
On an airplane, what seat are you demanding? Aisle, center, window?
Bernhardt: First class pod, so I can take a nap.
Scott: A window seat is a must!
