It’s hard to believe that it was 20 years ago that Lidia Bastianich opened Lidia’s Kansas City (101 West 22nd Street) in the freighthouse building in the Crossroads. At the time the building (now home to Jack Stack Barbecue, Grünauer and Lidia’s) was vacant like so many other buildings in the neighborhood, with standing water pooled inside and trees growing out of the roof. Yet Bastianich, who was also considering locations for a restaurant at the Plaza and in Overland Park, saw the neighborhood’s potential, and took a risk that ultimately paid off in spades. Tonight, the restaurant celebrates the anniversary with a dinner service hosted by Bastianich herself. The meal will highlight favorite dishes from the past 20 years, in a multicourse format. Seatings are available from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Visit the restaurant’s website for reservations or call 816-221-3722.
