An edible cookie dough shop is coming to south KC, Bluestem is hosting a Boulevard beer dinner, Fat Tire’s Tour de Fat is Saturday, and more: your food and drink events, August 7-13
Tuesday, August 8
Few do it better than the chefs at Bluestem (900 Westport Road), and it feels a bit like gilding the lily to add some of Boulevard Brewing Company’s best limited release beers to the mix, but that’s what tonight’s specialty dinner is all about. Chef Andrew Longres and his team are preparing five courses with Boulevard’s seasonals in mind, including three varieties of the excellent Saison Brett. Start with a dish of marinated beets with sheep’s milk cheese, berries and burnt honey (paired with Berliner Weisse), followed by a plate of house-cured charcuterie with grilled sourdough and a cherry moustarda (the Changeling). Next up is glazed pork belly cooked with peaches, bourbon and onions (Love Child No. 8), followed by a grilled Black Angus ribeye, served with corn and charred broccoli in a veal jus (Saison Bretts ’14, ’16 and ’17). Dessert includes fresh peaches and raspberries served with a creme fraiche baviose and pistachios (Foeder Project #2). The dinner is $110 a person, exclusive of tax or gratuity. Call 816-561-1101 to make reservations.
Fans of Alton Brown might enjoy tonight’s Science of Cooking course at the Lawrence Community Building (115 West 11th Street), hosted by the Lawrence Parks & Rec department. Biochemist Lisa Elles will be examining the chemistry behind eggs that makes them such versatile ingredients. Attendees will get to experiment along with Elles, and will sample the results of these experiments. The course is $39; more information and registration here.
Thursday, August 10
Anyone who knows that particular pain of not being able to eat raw cookie dough should prepare to head to south KC today for the opening of Cookie Dough Madness (9928 Holmes Road). Clearly sent to us from heaven, Cookie Dough Madness serves, yes, edible (eggless) raw cookie dough, ice cream and breakfast treats. The party begins at 4 p.m.
Friday, August 11
One of Lawrence’s goofiest mainstays is the Sandbar (17 East Eighth Street), known for its aquariums, tiki decor, tropical drinks and, of course, its hourly indoor hurricane (it gets loud and windy). Tonight and tomorrow, the bar is hosting its annual block party, complete with big outdoor beer garden, live music, inflatable slide for kids and more. Cover to get into the bar is $5; the block party itself is free.
Saturday, August 12
Also in Lawrence, Port Fonda (900 New Jersey Street) is hosting a two-day popup featuring a couple of other Lawrence greats: Repetition Coffee and the Waffle Iron. For food, the Waffle Iron and Port Fonda are teaming up, and Repetition Coffee is bringing special stuff, including its cold brew and a single-origin Ethiopian espresso, and helping provide collaborative cocktails.
Closer to home, Fat Tire’s Tour de Fat is at Crossroads KC (417 East 18th Street). The party includes lots of Fat Tire beer (for purchase), carnival and vaudeville performers, comedians, costumes, contests and a performance from Atlas Genius. Gates open at 7 p.m.; tickets are available in advance here for $15 ($20-$25 at the gate day of), and benefits proceed Bike Walk KC.
