The Folk Alliance International Conference, presented by Folk Alliance International, has its 2024 iteration this February 21-25 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel. With well over 100 artists performing over the course of five days, “crossing a diverse array of genres including Appalachian, Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Global Roots, Hip-Hop, Old-Time, Singer-Songwriter, Spoken Word, Traditional, Zydeco, and various fusions,” it can be intimidating to figure out where to start.

We’ve selected a few artists for whom we think you should make time to see, and we’ll be featuring one a day leading up until the conference kicks off on Wednesday, February 21.

Over the past couple years, I’ve had the opportunity to see North Carolina’s Resonant Rogues play outdoor shows at both Gaslight Gardens and Kaw Valley Public House in North Lawrence, and each time has been an absolute treat. Their harmonies are something to die for, and the talent with which they play their banjo and and guitars — and accordion! — will have you feeling like you’ve found your new favorite. After that first encounter, I’ve made sure to never miss a Resonant Rogues appearance, and neither should you.

Bonus: On Tuesday, February 20, Resonant Rogues play a show at the Northside Social in Lawrence with the Tonganoxie Split. In addition to two-stepping lessons, Ron and Don’s BBQ will be vending food and you can snag some new duds from Cunntry Legends, as well. The Tonganoxie Split’s Monzie Leo has assured us this will be one hell of a good time and that all gender expressions will be welcomed and encouraged. Details on that show here.

“Rooted in the mountains of Western North Carolina, The Resonant Rogues are fronted by songwriting duo Sparrow and Keith Josiah Smith, who share a passion for movement and sound. The sounds of Appalachian old-time, classic country, and vintage soul inspire their original, harmony laden tunes.”

Resonant Rogues play Saturday, February 24, at 6:00pm in Washington Park Place 1.

New this year to the conference is that the public can get tickets to the official showcases. You don’t have to register for the conference to go for just one night. Individual evening tickets available here.
