Folk Alliance Band of the Day: Olive Klug
The Folk Alliance International Conference, presented by Folk Alliance International, has its 2024 iteration this February 21-25 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel. With well over 100 artists performing over the course of five days, “crossing a diverse array of genres including Appalachian, Americana, Blues, Bluegrass, Celtic, Cajun, Global Roots, Hip-Hop, Old-Time, Singer-Songwriter, Spoken Word, Traditional, Zydeco, and various fusions,” it can be intimidating to figure out where to start.
We’ve selected a few artists for whom we think you should make time to see, and we’ll be featuring one a day leading up until the conference kicks off on Wednesday, February 21.
If you don’t hear Olive Klug sing “There’s a person who hates me inside of my mind/ Who’s repeating the same tired line you don’t deserve the gold” on her song “Faking It” and immediately go, “Oh, I GET that,” we can’t be friends. It’s the opening song on Klug’s Don’t You Dare Make Me Jaded, released last August, and sets the stage for you to fall in love with their “beautiful tone, vividly honest storytelling […] and uniquely modern lyrical sensibilities.” Klug’s used their TikTok following and what they describe as a “Camp Counselor” aesthetic to cultivate a community with their fans, and we wanna be part of it, too.
“A key player in the new wave of contemporary folk singers, Olive Klug is a folk singer/songwriter known for their beautiful tone and vividly honest storytelling. Their style takes inspiration from genre icons like Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile as well as modern favorites like Lizzy Mcalpine and Adrianne Lenker.”
Olive Klug plays Friday, February 23, at 8:15pm in Washington Park Place 3.
New this year to the conference is that the public can get tickets to the official showcases. You don’t have to register for the conference to go for just one night. Individual evening tickets available here.
