Fight the War

Overland Park isn’t exactly prime real estate for an anti-war protest. Call it youthful idealism or high school ingenuity, but that’s precisely why local teens are banding together for a peace rally in the heart of conservative Johnson County. Michelle Mubarack, a student at St. Aquinas High School, says she and fellow rally organizers were sick of simply talking about their opposition to the war in Iraq, so they decided to take to the streets for their first foray into political activism. “We were actually first considering holding the rally in Lawrence, but in the end we were afraid that a rally in Lawrence would just be brushed off and not taken seriously,” Mubarack says. “An anti-war rally in Johnson County is much less common and might get a bigger response.” If the 500 friends on their MySpace page are any indication, the rally organizers could have the surprise effect they’re aiming for. They’ll make some noise from 3 to 6 p.m.
at the intersection of 95th Street and Quivira. For more information, check out myspace.com/kc_protest.
