Fictional Flora

Last month, the ambitious community theater crew over at the Barn Players unspooled A Midsummer Night’s Dream, offering up all the lovestruck swooning you could hope for. Having nailed the forest, the Barn Players now take on one of the most beloved gardens in all literature: Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden, a tender marvel of a novel, the story of an orphan girl who discovers a — well, you know. The production stars a 12-year-old (Mosha Clyma), but don’t expect children’s theater. Director Barb Nichols is mounting Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon’s full-on Broadway take on the story, with a delicate, affecting score and the requisite pageantry. The show premieres at 7:30 tonight at the Barn Players (6219 Martway in Mission) and runs Friday-Sunday through September 13. For more information, call 913-432-9100 or see
