Eyvind Kang and Tucker Martine
This first collaboration between violinist and composer Eyvind Kang and producer and sound sculptor Tucker Martine splits its 40 minutes among breathtakingly vivid ocean-floor gazes, uneasy stirrings from the bottom of a chasm, and syntheses of the two. On the opening “Horizon,” crisp, clipped guitar gradually succumbs to autumnal, needlepoint violin and bleeding, watercolor synthesizers. The muted “Madrona” simmers like an orchestral warm-up under black lights. And “Bright Shadows Occulted” evolves from the sound of dental tools rattling on a vibrating metal table to an ominous guitar pulse sweating hell’s bells. Tucker and Kang bring light and dark together for “The Echoing Green,” in which insistent, newsreel pianos duke it out with shimmering, silvery schools of flute. Who wins? You do.
