Every Hog Has Its Day

The time has come, as it does every year, for the groundhog of lore to emerge from its winterlong subterranean slumber and face its shadow. Today, learn all about the furry arbiter of seasons at the Groundhog Has Its Day walk at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center (4750 Troost).Teachers from the center will lead activities designed to stimulate groundhog interest and understanding. Though a captive groundhog won’t be on display, visitors can learn how to catch a glimpse of one in the wild. Groundhogs, also known as whistlepigs, woodchucks and hoary marmots, are famous for signaling spring with their appearances. But don’t think they’re emerging from hibernation just for the sake of a tan. The raunchy rodents are hoping to hook up quicker than young Hollywood. The free, all-ages walk is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call 816-759-7300.
