Eric Church and Great Good Fine OK topline your concert week
ERIC CHURCH
Is Eric Church some kind of darling? I mean, here he is, a little over a year after releasing Mr. Misunderstood — the Country Music Awards’ 2016 Album of the Year — already steamrolling through an aggressive tour that has concertgoers and music reviewers alike all in a tizzy. The setlist for his “Holdin’ My Own” tour changes with each show, and it’s not likely to be brief. That’s fine. After all, the 39-year-old artist has a rather extensive array of material to choose from, and a good deal of growth to demonstrate over the three or so hours he’ll spend onstage Tuesday night. Mr. Misunderstood, as it turns out, is actually Mr. Popular.
7 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, at the Sprint Center, 1407 Grand
PURE PRAIRIE LEAGUE
This crazy ol’ world keeps a-turnin’, but some things never change. After more than 50 years, Pure Prairie League is still leisurely ambling to the tune it set way back in 1965. The Ohio act’s current lineup features founding member and pedal-steel acolyte John David Call, drummer and singer Scott Thompson, guitarist and singer Donnie Clark and bassist Mike Reilly (who has been with the band since 1972). Some of the band’s notable former members, of course, include Craig Fuller, who later became a member of Little Feat, and a fella you might know called Vince Gill. Longtime fans — or just casual listeners — will recall the band’s eternal “Amie.” The band hasn’t put out a new record since 2006’s All in Good Time, so you can expect the good stuff to still sound the same. If you yearn for the days of early FM radio, get yourself to Knuckleheads on Friday night. Outlaw Jim & the Whiskey Benders open.
8:30 p.m. Friday, January 27, at Knuckleheads, 2517 Rochester
GREAT GOOD FINE OK
The phrase “synth-pop band from Brooklyn” isn’t really enough to get the hairs on your arms to stand up. I mean, who isn’t a synth-pop band from Brooklyn these days? But Great Good Fine OK does an admirable job of avoiding the clichés of its chosen genre, and the band’s new EP, III, is a fearless and addictive collection of songs that reminds you why synth-pop bands from Brooklyn became a thing in the first place. Jon Sandler and Luke Moellman strike a balance between lighthearted, danceable beats — the kind of thing that works for a high-powered spin class or over the speakers at H&M — and emotional, intelligent lyrics that are in no way disposable. Thursday at RecordBar, join the fan club.
