Enemy Mine

It doesn’t add up: 33 miners trapped under 2,050 feet of earth for 69 days, emerging from their ordeal in exemplary health (with one exception). If we hadn’t prayed along with Chile and witnessed the miracle ourselves, we’d think the whole thing was made up. On the other hand, the 1978 Mexican film Ora sí, Tenemos que Ganar (Pray, Yes, We Must Win) tells an all-too-familiar story: An early-20th-century mine collapse incites miners to revolt against their exploitative employer, prefiguring the revolution to come. The English-subtitled film screens at 6:30 p.m. at the Kansas City Central Library (14 West 10th Street, 816-701-3400). On loan from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it concludes a free monthlong series commemorating the Mexican Revolution’s centennial. The accompanying photo exhibit, Viva La Revolución: Mexico 1910 in Retrospect, continues at the Central Library through January 2. See kclibrary.org for details.
