Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Saturday night at Crossroads KC

Deep into Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros’ set Saturday evening at Crossroads KC, singer Jade Castrinos instructed drummer Orpheo McCord to play a “funky-ass beat,” and the recognizable whistle-driven intro to “Home” incited the crowd. Throughout the song, members of the audience were asked to share a story. One person told frontman Alex Ebert that she and her husband were naming their baby after him.

But the highlight was when a man and a woman got engaged and then immediately married while onstage. If any of the other couples in the crowd had previously claimed “Home” as “their song,” they lost that claim when Jordan and Desiree exchanged vows midsong (a first for the band) in front of guitarist Christian Letts, who is apparently an ordained minister. The two danced their first dance as a married couple to a spontaneous cover of “Sea of Love.”
