Eat This Now: Double cut Iowa pork chop at The Brass Onion

My dining history in Prairiefire has been limited to gas station snacks tucked in my pockets while going to see a film at the AMC Theatres. I took the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone by indulging in The Brass Onion, a family-owned New American restaurant in Overland Park.

The Brass Onion provides a refined yet cozy atmosphere. It offers a comprehensive selection of adored comfort foods centered around “low country goodness”, including mac & cheese with shrimp and bacon, prime rib, deviled eggs, and jambalaya. My choice for the night was the double-cut Iowa pork chop ($32).

This dish featured a healthy serving of succulent mushrooms and creamy mashed potatoes to accompany the star of the show: a well-crusted, flavorful pork chop. In addition to the richness of flavor, the pork chop also had a level of tenderness expected for this cut of meat. Each bite carried the kind of warmth that reminded me of a Sunday dinner with family.

The homeliness of this dining experience continued beyond the plate. The hospitality at The Brass Onion was exemplary. From the moment I walked in the door, the staff made me feel very comfortable and built a relationship that went beyond predictable pleasantries.

With The Brass Onion being as good an experience as it was, I now know that Prairiefire is an ideal place for dinner and a movie. Next time I go, I am confident that the staff will find humor in hearing the rustling of Peanut M&M’s in my pocket as I walk in.

The Brass Onion is at 5501 W. 135th St, Overland Park, KS 66224.
