Easy Danger

Black-and-white images of people and technology — an uneasy combination — peer out of 10 windows around the intersection of 14th Street and Baltimore starting today. Lawrence artist David Loewenstein has installed 10 paintings in the ground-floor windows at BNIM Architecture (106 West 14th Street, 816-783-1500). Large enough to be viewed from the street, the graphics look like giant woodcuts, and the subjects hint at the dangers of living a constantly wired existence: A hand reaches through the screen of a laptop, and a harried-looking driver glances down at her cell phone as the dream catcher suspended from her rearview mirror swings. The point, Loewenstein says, is “the easy drift of highly seductive technological gadgets into our lives without considering their capacity for provoking mental distress, physical harm and dubious claims of truth.” He’ll be at the exhibit’s opening reception at BNIM today from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
