Due East

Cao Fei is a 32-year-old Beijing artist whose upbringing was influenced by supercharged Chinese commerce, popular culture and the Internet. Through June 5, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (4525 Oak, 816-751-1278) presents the American debut of her video project RMB City Opera, a sweeping narrative set in the virtual world of Second Life. In the 1940s, China’s revolutionary propaganda included a genre of nationalist operas, a form that Cao adapts to the virtual medium using pop-culture figures such as Batman and Superman, set to a soundtrack of familiar contemporary music. The settings include Tiananmen Square, the Beijing Olympic Stadium and the Guggenheim Museum. The screenings, in the Nelson’s Project Space gallery in the Bloch Building, are free. Kids: The video contains a brief, sexually explicit segment, so make sure your parents don’t know about it in advance. For more information, see nelson-atkins.org.— Chris Packham
