Down in the Dotte
Kansas City, Kansas, kicks off its art season this weekend with its Follow the Dotte Art Walk. Between 5 and 8 p.m., restaurants and galleries — including Imago Dei Gallery (730 Armstrong), Hangers on the Hill (613 North Sixth Street) and the Kaw Valley Arts and Humanities Gallery (756 Armstrong) — will open their doors for artist receptions. Follow the Dotte happens every second Friday of the month between March and October.In conjunction with Follow the Dotte, the YWCA’s 6th Street Gallery (1017 North Sixth Street) presents the group exhibit Because I’m a Woman, which includes paintings, illustrations and collages by more than 10 female artists. Among the featured artists are multimedia artist Jessica Logsdon and burlesquer Rita Brinkerhoff. The reception starts at 5 p.m. The YWCA closes its celebration of women’s history with a March 30 program by self-described “feminist avengers” the Guerrilla Girls. The women in the group, who maintain their anonymity by wearing gorilla masks, produce in-your-face stickers, posters, billboards and books that tackle heavy social issues such as misogyny, rape, abortion, and gay and lesbian rights.
