Dos Mundos, Dos Escritoras

Lorraine M. López, the first-ever Latina finalist for the prestigious PEN/Faulkner award for fiction, returns to Kansas City from her new home in Los Angeles, along with poet Gloria Vando, as part of the University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Mark Twain Writers Workshop and the annual Cuarta Página reading series by the Latino Writers Collective. López’s collection Homicide Survivors Picnic and Other Stories includes a piece about a child linguist caring for her niece while the child’s mother is jailed as well as a story of a boy who attends a picnic with his sister, whose boyfriend was recently slain. Vando’s book Promesas: Geography of the Impossible explores the connections between identity and geography through the struggles of the people of Puerto Rico. Vando’s reading is at 7 p.m. at the Writers Place (3607 Pennsylvania, 816-753-1090). RSVP at 816-333-6349. López reads at the Mexican Consulate (1600 Baltimore) at 7 p.m. Friday.
