Don’t miss the Botticellis this Saturday at the Record Bar (MP3 enhanced)

When the Botticellis cancelled their show last June at Davey’s Uptown, I wept a single tear and made origami figures only to teach them the utter futility of hope. (OK, actually I enjoyed a great set by Expassionates and probably went to Golden Wraps or something).

The San Fran five-piece charmed my loafers off with its 2008 release, Old Home Movies, and I’ll wager you a ray of sunshine it’ll do the same for you. Taking cues from George Harrison and the Everly Brothers as well as contemporaries like the Shins and the New Pornographers, the group’s tube-warmed and reverb-drenched sound evokes fake memories from the California summers we never experienced. There’s also a healthy dose of soft-rock in the mix a la the Autumn Defense, but lullabies like “Tongue is Blue” are complemented by British invasion rave-ups like “The Reviewer.”

At any rate, I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed for the Botts to roll into Kansas City for real this time around.
