DJ Shadowrunner

DJ Shadowrunner has been playing electronic music around the Midwest since 1989, but he didn’t start playing hip-hop until three years ago. Before then, he was known for his silky-smooth trance (not the epic, headache-inducing stuff). Shadowrunner still plays his power sets at NV two Saturdays each month, but he also spins hip-hop with Two Heavy, begging the question: When EDM DJs cross over to hip-hop, is it just a money grab? Though he can’t front on getting paid, Shadowrunner says there’s a limited demand for electronic music in KC, and club owners want what’s popular. Conventional wisdom suggests that a hip-hop DJ spinning electronic music is better than an electronic DJ trying to do hip-hop. But Shadowrunner advises making that judgment on a case-by-case basis. “I really have to give it up to the hip-hop DJs,” he says. “I didn’t have much respect for them until I made the change, and it was hard. But my passion is still with electronic music.” Check out djshadowrunner.com, where he’ll have a slew of new mix sets up for download very soon.
