DJ Shad

Given his familiarity with hip-hop locals, you’d never know that DJ Shad has been here just five years. If the quiet, unassuming Shad does talk to you, it’s probably about a new 12-inch yet to hit the radio. It’s only then that you pick up on his sharp Chicago accent. At the Hangout’s monthly Shake & Pop DJ night on Saturday, hosted by Candlewax and Ben Fuller, Shad has prepared for you a “mini history” DJ set of the Chicago-born ghetto-house genre (think house music with graphic and sexually uninhibited chanting and rapping) that he grew up listening to on the radio, circa 1992. While attending the University of Southern Illinois, Shad recorded a ghetto-house mix called Got Back, of which he has sold about 2,000 copies. Generally, the Shake & Pop monthly serves as a fusion of the hot sounds of the hour, including a smorgasbord of all the exclusive remixes one can handle. Let this specific performance be your introduction to the roots of DJ Shad.
