DJ Kool-Roc C

We figured DJ Kool-Roc C was more of a hip-hop guy when we caught him throwing down a refreshing hip-hop set on the patio at the Hurricane a couple of weeks ago. But Kool-Roc C, who plays house at NV every Thursday night, is a Chicago-transplanted, house-music OG. Roc, who is 33 now, began playing house at the tender age of 16. He recalls hanging out at the park in Chicago as a kid and looping the swings above the swingset so he and his friends could breakdance on the mat underneath. “My mother bought me turntables when I was a teenager to keep me off the streets,” he says with a blinged-out grin. Seventeen years later, he supports his four daughters by playing at NV and other area clubs throughout the week. Good call, Mom.
