DJ Just

Even though Westport still attracts a substantial hip-hop crowd in these dwindling days of summer, none of the clubs in Westport advertise their hip-hop DJs as playing the kind of music that such spinners ought to play (hip-hop, dummy). Nevertheless, DJ Just continues his reign as one of Kansas City’s best and most recognizable purveyors of the genre every Tuesday night on the Hurricane’s patio. The man just continues to break new hits — he was one of the first area DJs to play “Crank Dat” by Soulja Boy — and he maintains near flawless beat-mixing (we’ve been stalking his night at the Hurricane for over a month and have yet to hear him fuck up). Just also does a fine job of pulling out the hits right when there’s maximum potential for dancing, usually after Harpo’s has closed and the crowd has migrated across the street to enjoy the ‘Cane’s 3 a.m. license. Now that this club is welcoming back beats after a long rock-only spell, the Hurricane has become a spot where a mixed crowd can convene on a Tuesday night for the greater good of popular hip-hop, regardless of who’s disguising it as “Top 40.”
