Dish & Drink KC: Trying a piz-ammie at Orange by Devoured and a refresher at City Market Coffee

This is going to sound overly dramatic, but I think there are few greater joys in life than discovering a dish so tasty that it lingers in your mind long after the last bite. Orange by Devoured, already beloved for its showstopping pizzas and irresistible small plates, has done it again. This time, with a creation that deserves its own spotlight: the Piz-sammie.

If you’re unfamiliar, allow me to introduce you to your next obsession.

The Piz-sammie is Orange by Devoured’s take on the classic Italian Panuozzo: pizza dough, fired to pillowy perfection, then split and filled with an ensemble of flavors. Inside, you’ll find arugula pesto, your choice of herb-roasted chicken or portobello mushrooms, mixed greens, blistered tomatoes, and, traditionally, a trio of cheeses—provolone, pecorino, and parmesan—all finished with a drizzle of Calabrian chili oil.

I ordered mine dairy-free with the portobello mushrooms, and truthfully, I didn’t miss the cheese for even a moment.

The dough was airy with a slight crispness along the edges that gave way to a tender, satisfying interior. The portobellos were beautifully roasted. Meaty, savory, and melding effortlessly with the vibrant, aromatic pesto. Without the distraction of cheese, the earthy flavors really took center stage. A final kiss of Calabrian chili oil added a gentle warmth that built with each bite, rounding out the sandwich with a taste of subtle heat.

Every element felt deliberate and balanced. Proof that when quality ingredients and thoughtful execution come together, you don’t need to drown a dish in extras to make it memorable.

Normally, the Piz-sammie is a bit of an insider’s secret, available only during Orange Hour (Monday and Tuesday evenings, 5–8 p.m., dine-in only). But if you’re lucky enough to find yourself there when it’s offered, consider this your sign to order it immediately, and without hesitation.

Orange by Devoured is located at 325 East 31st Street, Kansas City, MO 64108.

Every so often, my friends and I indulge in what I like to call a “riverside reset”. A walk by the water where the pace is easy, the conversation flows, and the fresh air does its quiet work. We almost always begin at City Market Coffee, our unofficial starting line. A familiar ritual: coffee in hand, hearts open, and miles of connection ahead.

Normally, I’d stick to one of my favorites: a bold coffee, a juice, maybe one of their shakes. But with City Market Coffee recently expanding both its space and menu, it felt like the right moment to try something new. The Cucumber Basil Refresher caught my eye, and honestly, it couldn’t have suited the morning more perfectly.

Light and bright, this mocktail was a quiet revelation: fresh basil, crisp cucumber, a squeeze of lime, club soda for sparkle, and a drizzle of house-made honey syrup to tie it all together. The cucumber brought a clean, cooling note, the basil added a subtle, herbal lift, and the honey gave just enough smooth sweetness to round things out. The lime? The zing kept every sip feeling fresh.

Naturally, once my friends showed up and took a sip, they were hooked too. It wasn’t long before we were all standing there, laughing with matching glasses in hand, already half-joking that next time we’ll ask for a refillable version.

City Market Coffee is located at 305 Main St, Kansas City, MO 64105.
