Third Place Lounge

Kansas City has a rich history of spaces that bring people together, and the coolest addition to this tradition is Third Place Lounge, a community lounge and micro event space located in Kansas City’s West Side.

But this isn’t just another venue—Third Place Lounge is on a mission to become Kansas City’s “third place,” an inclusive, shared social space where people can gather, unwind, and connect outside of home and work.

Inside, the ambiance is cozy yet modern, with comfortable seating areas that encourage conversation and connection. The decor strikes a perfect balance between thrift store chic and modern comfort, making it a place where you can easily settle in for a few hours, whether you’re catching up with friends or meeting new people.

The concept of the “third place” is central to what Third Place Lounge aims to be—a community hub where people from all walks of life can gather, relax, and engage. In a world that often feels disconnected, Third Place Lounge is a breath of fresh air, offering a space where inclusivity and community are at the forefront.

Even their menu is thoughtfully crafted to match this ethos, offering a range of drinks that cater to diverse tastes while emphasizing quality and creativity.

They don’t overlook the mocktails, either. Their zero-abv menu is just as thought out and delicious as their cocktail menu, making sure to provide the sober and sober-curious communities with round-two-worthy drink options.

I started my visit with the Southwest Honey ($12), a cocktail that’s perfect for social sipping. While I don’t typically drink vodka, the mix of chamomile vodka, salted honey, lemon, mint, ginger, and Mineragua was refreshing.

Another one of their signature cocktails that stood out was the Express(o) Yo’Self, their spin on the espresso martini. It is made with cacao butter-washed rum, Dona Fina Espresso, and Cafe de Olla syrup. It is a great cocktail for day drinking during brunch or hanging out on a breezy evening.

What truly sets Third Place Lounge apart, though, is its role as a micro event space. Throughout the week, the lounge hosts a variety of events, from karaoke nights to community workshops, all aimed at fostering connection and creativity.

It’s clear that this is more than just a place to vibe and drink—it’s a place to engage, learn, and grow as part of the Kansas City community.

The staff at Third Place Lounge helps make the experience unforgettable, too. Their high energy, knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm for the lounge’s mission make every visit special. They go out of their way to ensure that everyone feels welcome and included, embodying the spirit of the third place in every interaction.

In a city known for its hospitality, Third Place Lounge is carving out a niche as Kansas City’s go-to spot for community, connection, and comfort.

Third Place Lounge is located at 1744 Broadway Blvd, KCMO 64108.

Kinship Cafe

There’s no shortage of local gems and unique cafes in Kansas City, but Kinship Cafe stands out for its commitment to authenticity and community. This Black-owned coffee shop is more than just a place to grab your morning brew—it’s a gathering space where tradition and innovation meet, offering a refreshingly straightforward approach to coffee.

On my visit to Kinship Cafe, I was eager to get something hot in my hands so I sprung for the Matcha Latte ($4.50), which I ordered with oat milk and honey—a combination that offered a balance of earthiness, creaminess, and sweetness.

As someone who appreciates well-crafted matcha, I found this latte delicious. The matcha itself was robust and full of flavor, striking the perfect harmony with the natural sweetness of the honey. The oat milk added a rich, velvety texture that made each sip feel indulgent yet light.

It was a drink that felt both comforting and energizing, ideal for a peaceful morning or an afternoon pick-me-up.

What’s particularly notable about Kinship Cafe is that, unlike many cafes, Kinship does not offer decaf coffee or sugar-free syrups. While this seems unusual, Kinship still ensures that every cup is made with care, using the best possible components.

The cafe’s minimalist, inviting space is both modern and welcoming. Large windows flood the space with natural light, while simple, thoughtful decor elements create a sense of calm and connection. It’s the kind of place where you can relax and savor your drink or sit comfortably as you get hours of work done.

Kinship Cafe’s name speaks to its mission: fostering a sense of kinship and community among its patrons. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’re greeted with warmth and genuine hospitality.

Kinship Cafe is located at 719 N 6th St, Kansas City, KS 66101.
