DISCREET CHARMS, OBSCURE DESIRES

Surrealist Luis Bunuel seared his brand into the cinematic psyche with his 1929 short Un chien andalou, in which a woman’s eyeball — yeesh! Yeah, that one. Following that auspicious debut, the Spaniard embarked on one of the most inventive and provocative careers in film, including the fertile period that followed his emigration to Mexico in the late 1940s. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Kansas City Public Library honors that work with “The Films of Luis Buñuel in Mexico,” a retrospective continuing on Sundays through October 11 at the library’s Plaza Branch (4801 Main). Admission is free; to RSVP, call 816-701-3407 or see kclibrary.org.
Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Sept. 13. Continues through Oct. 11, 2009
