Dinosaur Jr.

What were the odds? The likelihood of this indie-rock touchstone’s original lineup ever reuniting — guitarist and singer J. Mascis, drummer Murph, bassist and singer Lou Barlow — appeared as nil as the Beatles ever regrouping. Still more astounding: The trio went on to record a new album that easily holds its own against the band’s pre-Nirvanamania output. A roiling, through-a-prism folk-punk document, 2007’s Beyond does Dinosaur Jr.‘s legacy so proud, it’s almost as though Mascis’ morose wail and screaming solos never went away.  OK, he did put out some solo records, but those sucked.
