Delfeayo Marsalis plays the Blue Room Friday, May 6
Delfeayo’s older brothers have long been the better-known names of the Marsalis jazz family. Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis came up through Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and today is artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and saxophonist Branford Marsalis once led the Tonight Show band. But Delfeayo Marsalis doesn’t lack experience: He has produced jazz albums for Harry Connick Jr., Marcus Roberts and his brother Branford. And he’s a master of jazz trombone, with a rich, sublimely smooth style that recalls the great J.J. Johnson as it flows with respect for jazz tradition. Friday night, Delfeayo takes the Blue Room stage at 8:30. Starting at 4 that day, the jazz museum, the Negro Leagues museum, the Black Archives and 18th & Vine businesses come together with music, food, exhibits and dancing, joining First Fridays as a new eastern anchor.
