Definitely Sucker MCs
Hip-hop karaoke is nothing new in London or New York, but until now, no one has launched this particular brand of delicious embarrassment in Kansas City.
Beatbroker, the head DJ in charge of the Sunday-night Hip-Hop and Hot Wings events at the downtown Peanut (418 West Ninth Street, 816-221-7470), is launching a weekly hip-hop karaoke segment from 6 to 8 p.m., before Hip-Hop and Hot Wings gets crowded. The songs are instrumental re-creations of popular tracks — not originals — and the Peanut’s televisions will display the lyrics.
“This will be full-fledged, cheeseball karaoke at its finest,” Beatbroker says. “It wouldn’t be as much fun otherwise, in my opinion.”
The available karaoke numbers will probably include worn-out favorites rather than the more adventurous underground tracks that some Peanut purists might prefer. But it won’t kill anyone to hear “Baby Got Back” for the 100th time, will it?
