Deep Drag

Today, the familial unit is flexible. Adopting friends as “relatives” is commonplace in 2008, and even more so for the folks who hang out at Tootsie’s (1818 Main, 816-471-7704). Bringing everyone together is the first king of Kansas City gay pride, Buttwiser. Throw a curve in the midweek routine and celebrate family at Buttwiser’s Bash Show. The cast of about 16 features the Kings of Kansas City, a traveling drag-king troupe and other gender-bending performers. There’s no cover, but the performers appreciate tips. “We are here to entertain the audience, and we’ll take suggestions from the crowd,” says Logan Rider, a 35-year-old from Independence and one of the Kings. Come get amicable at Tootsie’s. The show starts around 10:30 p.m., with $1.75 specials on well drinks and canned beer. “If you come in a stranger, you’ll leave a friend,” Rider says.
