Jazz Beat: Dee Dee Bridgewater and Irvin Mayfield with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra

Dee Dee Bridgewater has won three Grammy Awards (Best Jazz Vocal Album, Best Jazz Vocal Performance and Best Arrangement Accompanying a Vocal) and a Tony Award (Best Featured Actress in a Musical, as Glinda the Good Witch in The Wiz). She has recorded with jazz legends, including Dizzy Gillespie, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. Last year, Bridgewater and her playful yet spryly sophisticated singing joined trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and his New Orleans Jazz Orchestra for the album Dee Dee’s Feathers, a joyous tribute to New Orleans on the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. The music mixes standards and originals — some echoing the New Orleans jazz style, some just rambunctiously fun — in a celebration of the Big Easy. Saturday night, Bridgwater, Mayfield and NOJO bring the party to the Folly.
