David Byrne‘s work with Talking Heads was all about control, paranoia and icy calm. In contrast, his solo career has been filled with colorful experiments, dizzying world beats and … icy calm. Touring in support of Grown Backwards, which some are calling his most accessible post-Heads effort to date, Byrne is backed by a crack nine-piece band capable of moving from art-pop to Brazilian themes and classical music in the blink of an eye. And though the oddball bandleader’s penchant for restrained weirdness can be off-putting to the uninitiated, Byrne’s incendiary live show can still burn down the house.
