Dancing Forever

When Fred Astaire arrived in Southern California at the dawn of Hollywood’s golden age, few were wowed by his singing, acting or even his now-legendary dancing. Nobody predicted that Astaire would go on to set the dance standard for decades to come in America’s movie palaces, pairing with the likes of Ginger Rogers and Bing Crosby in some of the cinema’s most-prized creations.Check out Astaire and co-star Rita Hayworth in You Were Never Lovelier during the “Switch Partners” series at the Durwood Film Vault at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Branch of the Kansas City, Missouri, Public Library (14 West 1oth Street, 816-701-3400). The film, which drops the high-stepping Astaire into the midst of an Argentine family’s marriage donnybrook, features some of the twinkle-toed star’s most memorable moves. The event is free.
