Crossroads block become showcase for green practices

Back in the go-go days of downtown development in Kansas City, a piece of ground at 18th and Broadway was slated to become a condominium tower. But the market became oversaturated, and the project went on the shelf.

Rather than just turn the land into a parking lot, the property owner, DST Systems, got creative. What began as a simple rain garden escalated into a demonstration project for green practices. The site is so green, it’s purple, as in the Cherokee purple tomatoes that are plumping in one of the dozens of garden beds.
