Crossed Swords

Missouri will pick a new attorney general this fall. Three state legislators want badly to be the Democrat on the ballot. Margaret Donnelly, Jeff Harris and Chris Koster have raised a bunch of money; at last report, they have a total of $2.1 million to spend. The candidates will briefly set aside their donor call lists for the attorney general candidates debate at 6 p.m. at White Recital Hall at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (4949 Cherry). It’s an intriguing contest. The leading money raiser, Koster, is a former Republican who criticized fundamentalists’ hold on the GOP when he changed his jersey from red to blue. Some Democrats question Koster’s bona fides, however, and resent the appearance that his side encouraged another woman, Molly Korth Williams, to enter the race simply to take votes from Donnelly. The Committee for County Progress sponsors tonight’s debate, which is free and open to the public.
