Creature Feature is The Pitch’s weekly profile on a local animal looking for adoption. Shelters and support in Kansas City and the surrounding region are often pushed to the breaking point, so picking one future companion to highlight is how we want to put them on your radar. But there are far more than we could ever fit into our pages. Some of the frequent resources and groups we work with—who also have hundreds of other furry friends to flip through—include Great Plains SPCA, Olathe Animal Shelter, The Pet Connection, All Paws & Pals Play and Stay, Pleasant Hill Animal Control, Pawportunities, Wayside Waifs, Midwest Animal Resq, Pawsperity, Wild Souls Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, Humane Society Pet Food Pantry, KC Action For Animals, and Pet Resource Center of KC. For more resources like these, and for everything that help people with their needs too, check out The Pitch’s Community Resource Guide.

Here’s this week’s Creature Feature:

Meet the handsome Houston. He is a four-year-old boxer mix and kind of a beefcake at around 80 pounds. (We’d argue that it’s all muscle, too.)

One of the things he wants most is a forever home with a human friend to hang out with, not doing anything in particular, just a couple of pals spending time together. He’s a little shy at first, but if you give him a few minutes to get to know you, you two will be besties. And Houston promises to give the best snuggle seshes.

Really, though, he is way too smart to laze around 24/7. I know how to sit, down, stay, high five, orbit, between, and wait. Learning tricks is one of my favorite activities, and I can pick up new ones in just a day or two. I love to run outside and play in water from the hose. In case we weren’t clear enough on that, he absolutely loves water!! His favorite game of all is tug of war. (He’ll even let you win sometimes!)

He is kennel trained, house trained, and fine when left alone. In fact, he does some of his best snoozing in his crate while patiently waiting for you to come home. He is getting better on the leash all the time. He would do best in a home with older children because he is still learning how to contain all of his excitement around the little ones. Since he has been looking for a home for a while, we think he’d refer to be the only doggo, so he doesn’t have to share.

Houston’s got so much love to share, and he absolutely cannot wait to meet you! You’ll get to see his cute little nub of a tail wag and wag when he is happy, and that will make YOU happy, too!

If you or someone you know is looking to add a new member to the family, call or text The Pet Connection at 913-671-7387 to find out more about Houston!
