Creature Feature is The Pitch’s weekly profile on a local animal looking for adoption. Shelters and support in Kansas City and the surrounding region are often pushed to the breaking point, so picking one future companion to highlight is how we want to put them on your radar. But there are far more than we could ever fit into our pages. Some of the frequent resources and groups we work with—who also have hundreds of other furry friends to flip through—include Great Plains SPCA, Olathe Animal Shelter, The Pet Connection, All Paws & Pals Play and Stay, Pleasant Hill Animal Control, Pawportunities, Wayside Waifs, Midwest Animal Resq, Pawsperity, Wild Souls Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation, Humane Society Pet Food Pantry, Pawsitive Tails, KC Action For Animals, and Pet Resource Center of KC. For more resources like these, and for everything that help people with their needs too, check out The Pitch’s Community Resource Guide.

Here’s this week’s Creature Feature:

Leonard didn’t get the gentle beginning every puppy deserves. He was found at a lake—scared, unsure, and surrounded by 21 other puppies from multiple litters. He wasn’t just abandoned; he was forgotten. That kind of start leaves marks. And while Leonard is safe now, he’s still healing.

He’s a good boy. He loves other dogs and truly thrives when he’s around them. Big or small, he finds comfort in their presence. He loves the outdoors and his favorite toys are squeaky tennis balls.  He’s still working on his leash skills and feels most confident in a harness. He’s made big strides in his foster home, thanks to consistent desensitization training and the patient love of his foster siblings.

But Leonard isn’t meant to stay in limbo.

What he needs is a forever home with someone who sees his potential—not just his past. A calm, well-balanced dog in the home would be the perfect guide and friend for Leonard as he continues to grow. With the right support, he will blossom into the loyal, joyful companion he’s meant to be.
