Cowboy Indian Bear calls it quits

Well, this sucks: Cowboy Indian Bear, one of the area’s most reliable and promising acts, has declared itself dead.

A post on the band’s Facebook page this morning broke the news (and offered some music to ease the pain). It all sounds pretty amicable. See the whole thing after the jump.

Friends, we’ve got some big changes in our lives that we’d like to share with you. As many of you that see us on a regular basis already know, we’ve decided that our time as Cowboy Indian Bear has come to an end. When Beau, Marty and I started practicing in Joshua Browning’s church/studio in Williamstown, KS we were three dudes who had just moved from our hometown of Topeka to, what in our eyes, was our very own local music mecca: Lawrence, KS. We were flush with plans and ideas for our music. Over the course of almost six years, the three of us, along with Katlyn who joined in 2010, and Danny, who came in to the fold last year, worked hard and were able to accomplish so much. I will forever remember a moment earlier this year playing at The Bottleneck in Lawrence, when I could hear the audience singing “Saline” along with us. I was overwhelmed at the thought of how proud my seventeen-year-old self would be and couldn’t believe that years after we initially wrote that song, you all still cared to support us so much.

Between the music we made together, playing with some of our all-time favorite musicians, to being broke as a joke in one city or another debating which parts of our van we could afford to fix; it was all great. Even when things got tough, we were still making music and memories, because hey, thats what being in a band is about, right? Although CIB is ending, we are all going to continue making new music that we’re excited to share with you all. I’d like to take a second to mention those projects:
If you haven’t yet caught a live set from Marty’s Ebony Tusks project, then you need to rectify that ASAP. Danny’s band Spirit is the Spirit just wrapped up recording an EP that will probably be released later this year. Katlyn released TWO records earlier this year as La Guerre (which, incidentally, is the same number of full length records I’ve ever released, so I’ve got some catching up to do). As for myself, I’ve been working on a project called Bonzo Madrid, of which I’m sure all my bandmates will be involved in some shape or form. I’m excited to start creating and playing out with it, and will keep you all posted on the music I continue to make.

We’ve recieved so much support and help along the way that it would be impossible to thank everyone. Please know, however, that we have appreciated all of your support and have always tried to return it by putting diligent effort into everything we did. At this point, we can only try and repay you with some good tunes. We’re looking forward to seeing you on the flip side of things soon.

P.S. We wanted to include a download of an unrealeased song of ours called “I’ve Got a Home”. This was recorded early on during the sessions for “Live Old, Die Young” and was intended for a 7” split with our friends in Hospital Ships that never ended up coming to fruition. Here’s a link to download that song:
