Covers for a Cause

When local musician Paul Hakan was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, doctors gave him six months to live. Defying the odds, he managed to beat that prognosis by a good two years before succumbing to the disease in July. Tonight’s fundraiser at Davey’s Uptown Ramblers Club (3402 Main, 816-753-1909) honors him while spreading the word about pancreatic cancer. At the Van Hakan Benefit, a collective of musicians and friends performs acoustic originals and covers of Hakan’s favorite songs — expect T Rex, Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, the Cars, Cheap Trick, and maybe a Van Halen song or three. All proceeds from the $5 cover charge go toward Basic Missions’ Paul Hakan Memorial Fund for Musicians With Cancer. — Lorna Perry
