Cops nab shooter after robbery goes wrong
After a shootout in the 500 block of Troost early on Tuesday morning, Kansas City police collared 25-year-old Elijah K. Flores, of Liberty, and charged him with unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action. And they had no problem finding him: Flores was laid up in a local hospital after being shot in the gut by a neighbor who, after hearing shots, grabbed his Glock and ran outside to check it out.
Court records say Flores and two accomplices went to an apartment on the 500 block of Gillis Street at about 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday to steal some dope and CDs. Flores allegedly forced his way in, screamed “It’s like that motherfucker!” and fired his Omar-style shotgun into an apartment.
Actually, it’s like this: The noise from all that gunfire woke up the pistol-owning neighbor. When he saw a man later identified as Flores hop over a nearby fence, shotgun in hand, he ran over to Troost to confront him. The man ordered Flores to drop his gun; in the ensuing shootout, Flores was shot in the abdomen.
The neighbor dialed 911, laid down his gun, loaded his balls back into their wheelbarrow and waited for the police to show up. Flores’s accomplices, identified as Corbin Beauchamp, 19, and Corey Ortner, 20, remain at large.
